A 140cm cage is the minimum size for a pair. C&C cages are a great way to have a bigger setup, they are flexible and make the best use of the space you have, you can also expand them in the future, should you want to. C&C cages are the best solution if you have more than 3 piggies.
We don’t home to outdoor setups or hutches indoors. Hutches are generally narrower (so less space) and more enclosed. Piggies who live in hutches are generally more nervous. Piggies indoors, in more open cages, living in the middle of family life are more friendly and cheeky! Being indoors means it’s easy to give them more attention. Piggies don’t cope well with temperature changes, so outdoor piggies can’t easily be brought indoors for cuddles when it’s cold outside.
Piggies shouldn’t be in temperatures below 15 degrees, this is hard to maintain at night, even in summer. We will consider an insulated, heated shed. Many hutches have ramps, but piggies are ground dwellers and many won’t use ramps. The minimum size must be on one level. If you have a C&C with a loft, this is considered additional space.
Indoor piggies ideally will have a run for the garden, a heavy wooden, lidded run is ideal. Then piggies can safely be left outside all day, in good weather. We don’t home for piggies to free roam in the garden, as it’s not safe.
In summary, indoor piggies are more friendly and easy to care for. It’s easier to see any problems that might arise, like illness, so it can be treated promptly. Indoor setups can be pretty, tidy, and there shouldn’t be a smell! It also means no cleaning out to do in the cold!
